Question 1.

 

Q:        How is the Degree structured?

A:        The Degree is delivered via distance education and contains a total of 24 subjects. There are 3 Semesters per year and the recommended full time load is 4 subjects per Semester. The Degree will be delivered in the following 2 major phases:

Phase 1: Pre-employment
12 subjects full or part time study via Distance Education study incorporating entry level industry training and certification in the topics required to undertake entry level IT support positions. At the end of phase 1, students will study Subject: ITI212 Career Search and Communication which incorporate topics such as how to research prospective employers, how to present at interview, how to access the hidden job market and how to work with recruitment companies. Students would commence applying for full time, Level ICT help desk positions during this subject and continue applying until they secure a position.

Phase 2: Job search and completion of degree
12 subjects full or part time study via Distance Education study incorporating additional industry certifications.

Q:         I only have limited experience in Technology but would still like to work in the IT industry – is this Degree suitable for me?

A:         This degree is targeted at those that have a strong interest in computers and are passionate about working in the IT industry. However, if students are highly motivated and willing to work hard, it may be feasible for them to complete the degree.

Q:        Why are the industry certifications incorporated in this degree so important?

A:        Achievement of industry certifications provides an objective way for you to demonstrate your skills to prospective employees and to differentiate yourself in the highly competitive entry level IT job market.

Question 4.

 

Q:        Does this course guarantee me a job in the IT industry?

A:        No.  However, what this degree in the completion of Phase 1 will give you is the industry certifications and skills that entry level IT support employers are seeking plus the career search skills that are essential in gaining employment in the IT industry.  When you complete both Phases of the degree you will be positioned well for advancement in the IT industry since your academic degree will be blended with industry certifications that employer’s value.

Q:        Why is the degree so focussed on preparing students for entry level support positions?

A:        Because entry level support positions are (easily) the main conduit into employment in the IT industry.

Question 6.

 

Q:        Are Commonwealth supported (previously known as a HECS) places available for this degree?

A:        Yes.  If you are in a Commonwealth supported place, you only make a contribution towards the cost of your education (known as the student contribution) while the Australian Government contributes the majority of the cost. Also, deferred payment arrangements are available through the Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP).

A:        You will need to Broadband internet access and at least one computer with the following minimum specifications:

A:       Autumn Session (February - June) On-time closing date 31 October
Late (and final) closing date 10 December (next intake)

Spring Session (July-November) On-time closing date 1 May
Late (and final) closing date 10 June (2010 onwards Spring Intake)
