Course Aims and Objectives

Aims
The aim of this course is to provide professionals in the IT industry with an advanced course of study in networking and system administration that is current, relevant and integrates industry certification in these fields.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, graduates will posses:

  • Advanced skills in the design, implementation and management of networks
  • Certification as a Novell Certified Linux Engineer (Novell CLE) and Novell Certified Netware Administrator (CNA)
  • Higher order system administration knowledge and skills
  • Advanced skills in identifying network security risk profiles, defining network security policies and maintaining secure global networks
  • Problem-solving skills and methodologies when troubleshooting and documenting global internetworking problems
  • The ability to analyse complex client business and technical requirements and select appropriate internetworking technologies and topologies
  • Skills in the development of solutions that meets customer business objectives for functionality, performance, and cost

Entrance Requirements:
Applicants will generally be expected to have a degree in any discipline and at least two years experience in the IT industry. Preference will be given to these applicants. Applicants without an undergraduate degree wishing to be considered for admission into the Master of Networking and Systems Administration will need to have at least four years experience in the IT industry as a senior network manager or system administrator.

The Course consists of 12 subjects with a total value of 96 points.

ITC506: Topics in IT Ethics
ITC511: Networking Concepts 1
ITC512: Networking Concepts 2
ITC513: Wireless Networking Concepts
ITC514: Network and Security Administration
ITC593: Network security

 Important Note:
The Novell Industry Certification Subjects are only available for credit and are not available for study via Distance education with Charles Sturt University.   Credit for Novell industry certification subjects will be awarded on proof that the students have passed the relevant Novell industry certification exams.  It is recommended that students prepare for the Novell industry exams by attending courses at Excom Education - Click here for details about costs and course schedules.

For students that do not qualify for any credit, the recommended duration to complete the Masters Degree is 2 years. There are 3 trimesters per year and we recommend a commitment of 2 subjects per trimester.

Graduate Certificate in Networking and Systems Administration:

The Master of in Networking and Systems Administration is an articulated course that incorporates the Graduate Certificate in Networking and Systems Administration.  The certificate can be stand alone or, upon successful completion, students may proceed (with full credit) into the Master of Networking and Systems Administration.  To graduate with the Graduate Certificate, students must satisfactorily complete 4 subjects, which include two industry certification subjects.


Credit:
Academic credit is available to students who can provide proof that they have passed relevant industry examinations. Prospective students can obtain an estimate of credit entitlements by filling out the Request more Information form.

NOTE: The actual level of credit awarded will be confirmed upon acceptance into the Masters Degree.
